Throughout this article, we have listed some of the most successful pitch decks over the last several years. The goal of doing so was to show you exactly what other startups have done to raise huge investments. However, showing what works isn’t the only way to inspire you to create the best pitch deck.

Sometimes, it’s necessary to show what not to do, to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes that cause thousands of startups to repeatedly fail in securing investor deals. For this reason, we also decided to add Color.xxx to our list of favorite pitch decks.

After witnessing the startup, Color, raising $41 million; the team at New Work City put together a parody pitch deck for a fake company – Color.xxx. This pitch deck famously mocked bad pitch deck practices – and, it’s pretty darn hilarious.

If you want to bore an investor to the bone, make your pitch deck 55 slides as Color.xxx did. Long pitch decks frustrate investors, and there is a point where it just becomes disrespectful of their time. Most experts suggest a pitch deck of 10-12 slides, although some well-done pitch decks can reach 20 slides without feeling overwhelming.

Here’s another thing. Cool and trendy ‘buzzwords’ aren’t really as cool as they seem. Words like “lean,” “agile,” or “industry-disrupting” make startups feel like a super startup, but they do absolutely nothing for investors who hear these words a million times a month. There’s nothing unique about being “lean” anymore, and if you listen to 10 pitches in a row – nine of them will claim to be industry-disrupting. Give the facts and stay away from all the trendy startup language

Another thing this pitch deck showcased was the mistake of trying to be “everything” to “everybody”. Although the phrase “Color.xxx will do all those things…” seems hilarious, startups make this mistake all the time. Success isn’t about offering everything or having your hand in every popular trend – it’s about being the best in one specific thing and creating new trends.

If you want to build a great pitch deck, study Color.xxx’s deck, and do the exact opposite!
